Actually, I was going to Iceland this summer for a hiking trip, but of course everything went differently than originally planned, so I stayed in the capital Reykjavík for eight days due to a knee injury. As it quickly turned out, this was no reason to be upset because the northernmost capital in the world offered – considering its quite small size of only 120.000 inhabitants – a huge range of galleries, museums and art in general.

It soon occurred to me, that I didn’t know anything about contemporary art from this country and, apart from Ólafur Elíasson, this is certainly the case for the rest of continental Europe. However, it got soon apparent that this lack of attention for the art from the polar circle was not justified so I made the decision to get to know this country from its artsy site instead and to document it here in this blog.

With the help of Doro, director of Center for Icelandic Art and curator Birta of Living Art Museum I gained an insight in Icelandic Contemporary Art and had the chance to get an idea of the topical character and tendencies. I visited every gallery and art museum in Reykjavík, got to know many curators and artists and returned home with the feeling, that there is an atmosphere of departure in Icelandic art scene which is driven by the open-minded attitude towards new ideas and experiments, just how I already knew it from Berlin.

The result of these eight days in Reykjavík were my observations that I will document here in the weeks to come. Though Icelandic Contemporary Art is too multifaceted to comprehend it in such a short time, I want to introduce artists and their work, that are in my opinion somewhat representative for this place and this time or that seems otherwise interesting to me.

Those that are attentive observers of the German blogosphere have surely noticed, that there are already ambitious projects about Icelandic music and Icelandic street style (both in English) -: this is the portrait about the art hot spot at the polar circle.

However, I don’t want to try to make a valid point on Icelandic Contemporary Art in general. Even research has not found any descriptions or analyses yet, so for my research I can only rely on the Internet, the curators and artists and the only three issues of the only Icelandic art magazine, that was published in the last years (and doesn’t exist anymore).

As matters stand, there will be published at least ten articles on this topic in English and German as well. Among these, there will be one or maybe two raffles of Icelandic Art. Tomorrow’s the start: I will write about political art in times of crisis.
